"Discourse and exclusion in Central America"
Universidad de Costa Rica, April 8-10, 2013
INTRODUCTION
The
scientific interest on Discourse Studies started in the 1970´s mostly
on European countries. Since that time, theoretical and methodological
approaches, along with descriptive, explanatory and critical research
had advanced worldwide. Discourse studies had generated great interest
for different disciplines, thus deepening the knowledge on the field,
diversifying approaches, and originating inter-, multi- and, even,
trans-disciplinary developments. This increased interest on the field is
evidenced by the amount of publications along with national and
international symposiums, the creation of courses, lectures and Graduate
Programs on the field, plus the formation of international associations
for the study of discourse.
In
Latin America the field had also developed, and in 1995 the Latin
American Association for Discourse Studies (Asociación Latinoamericana
de Estudios del Discurso), ALED was created. ALED has branches in eight
countries, with hundreds of participants among their countries
affiliated. Nevertheless, in Central America the field´s development has been slower or less noticeable.
For
this reason, the Instituto de Investigaciones Lingüísticas, from
Facultad de Letras, Universidad de Costa Rica, has decided to organize
the “I Central American Symposium on Discourse Studies: Discourse and Exclusion in Central America", April 8 -10, 2013.
This
symposium will be a space for the researchers, professors and students
interested in the field to gather and exchange theoretical and
methodological proposals, and research developed in the region. Also,
concrete actions will be advanced for the creation of a Central American
Association on Discourse Studies, along with the establishment of
research networks and projects.
Symposium Objectives
To exchange experiences on Discourse Studies in Central America, by means of an academic meeting of specialists on the field.
To
discuss the theoretical and methodological contributions, as well as
the results and research experiences on Discourse Studies in Central
America.
To expand and divulge the scientific activity on Discourse Studies in Central America.
